Predictions Joe LaStella Versus U.S. Economists
| Mr. LaStella has accurately predicted years in advance (based on detailed published editorials) 85% of the strategic problems now facing the U.S. | VERSUS | U.S. economists have only been able to predict 3 of the last 20 recessions. |
What Capitol Hill and Presidential Candidates Need to Know:
1) The United States has about 22 billion barrels in proven oil reserves while consuming 7.6 billion barrels per year. Without imported petroleum, the U.S. gas gauge will read zero in only three years!
2) The United States only possesses 2% of the known world oil reserves. However, the U.S. consumes 25% of the total world´s daily oil production. This imbalance is totally unsustainable for the future of our country.
3) Building more nuclear plants will not reduce our need for crude oil or reduce U.S. oil imports. The fact is that 96% of the electrical energy in the U.S. comes from domestic coal, natural gas, hydroelectric, wind farms, etc. — not from oil. Long after we run out of oil, we will still have electricity to run our industries and homes. Maybe it is time to put your order in for a plug-in hybrid car.
4) Most people in the U.S. regard Californians as the "high-life" and maintain a "baby boomer" or "hip lifestyle", which may be partially true. However, the fact is that Californians use 40% less electrical energy per capita than the rest of the U.S. Through energy conservation, Californians have not increased their per capita electrical consumption since 1975, while the rest of the U.S. has increased its per capita electrical consumption by well over 40%. If the rest of the states were as efficient as California, the U.S. would not need any additional power plants for at least the next 25 years.
5) There is no magic bullet or anything on the horizon that will bail the United States out of this mess. The only immediate PARTIAL RELIEF is for U.S. citizens themselves to practice immediate conservation efforts.
6) Many other factors are contained in Mr. LaStella historical editorials available on this site.
Joe LaStella´s Tips on Conservation:
The average person drives at highway speeds in excess of 65 mph. Reducing your speed just 5 mph will save you the equivalent of 42 cents per gallon at the pump.
A gas saving energy tip that Joseph LaStella has been advocating for months is to plan your driving route to take advantage of right turns. For example, it will require up to 50% more gas to drive your car around the block in the counterclockwise direction versus driving in the clockwise direction. Clockwise driving does not require waiting at red lights and saves a substantial amount of fuel.
Stop buying needless junk food and other expensive items at the corner convenient gas station. A bottle of DesaniTM water will cost you $1.25 per bottle at a convenient store. The same bottle will cost you 25 cents (case of 24) at a local grocery store such as Safeway (NYSE: SWY) and Kroger (NYSE: KR). Plan your shopping, add money to your household budget and eat healthier.
Conservation is immediate and requires little or no funds to achieve, i.e. turn off lights; adjust thermostats; add just one more low energy light bulb to your house; check the air in your tires every month; use public transportation once per month; carpool twice per month; use water efficient showerheads in your home (which also saves energy for hot water); stop driving needlessly; then, educate your family and neighbors to do the same.
Mr. LaStella concluded, "We are Americans and we can win the energy war at home. Let´s follow California´s lead."
In summary, the U.S. consumes 25% of all the oil produced each day globally (22 million barrels versus 86 million barrels); yet the U.S. only possesses 2% of the know world oil reserves. Conservation will help and so will all of the other alternate energy sources contribution. However, in reality we are at least 10 years too late to avert serious consequences for the United States. This view is shared by some of the most respected experts in these fields, such as Kenneth S. Deffeyes, Matthew Simmons and Congressman Roscoe Bartlett Ph.D. The very best scenarios, soon to be realized, indicate great hardships for every person in the United States. The worst case scenarios, include any hiccups in the oil supply line to the U.S. such as hurricanes in the Golf of Mexico, terrorists acts on oil terminals, increase conflicts in the Mid-East, political unrest and instability in OPEC countries; could change the scenario to unimaginable proportions, which include rationing, panic, hoarding, black markets and worse. All of which we have seen emerging in only 16 days during the 1972 oil embargo which only reduced the supply of imported oil to the U.S. by 15% for 16 days.

Want more information?
Let´s talk engineering, economic factors and scientific facts not political rhetoric.
These are more facts to consider:
1) The three existing mega oil fields of the world (one in Mexico and two in Arab countries) are all exhibiting steep declines in production.
2) No new oil fields have been discovered since 1972. This was before all the new oil technology was even available, including satellite imaging. The 20 billion barrel oil discovery off the coast of Brazil is not a mega discovery. It would only supply the global demand for 240 days if you could get it all out and would take many years of pumping to get. This is not a solution.
3) The oil industry finds only one new barrel of oil for every six barrels we burn.
4) The United States has drilled more oil wells than the rest of the World combined yet only possesses 2% of the known oil reserves.
5) The U.N Secretary General Kofi Annan recently stated at the 2006 U.N. Climate Change Conference "Climate change is not just an environmental issue, as too many people still believe. It is an all-encompassing threat."
Mr. Annan went on to say "This is not science fiction. These are plausible scenarios, based on clear and rigorous scientific modeling. A few diehard skeptics continue to deny global warming is taking place and try to sow doubt. They should be seen for what they are: out of step, out of arguments and out of time."
6) Oil tar sands in Canada are only projected to produce 3,000,000 barrels/day by 2015. Too little, too late, and a global warming disaster. It requires more energy from the natural gas that is used to bake out the oil than is contained in the final product of oil. Oil tar engineers use this "strained gas" because there is no pipeline to ship the gas anywhere. Therefore, we get a double hit on global warming; first form the burning of the gas; then later when we burn the oil.
7) The Dow Jones Index has now experienced the worst June percentage drop since 1930.
8) Another interesting factor is the market cap evaluations of automakers, which indicate a unique perspective:
| Market Cap | ||
| ($Billions) | ||
| Ford | $10.9 | |
| GM | $6.1 | |
| Toyota | $148 | |
| Honda | $122 | |
9) For every degree Fahrenheit you increase the temperature of your AC you save 4 % on your electrical consumption
10) Norway has just completed a huge "doomsday vault" carved out of an artic mountain to store tens of millions of crop seeds in the event of a global disaster. The store is designed to hold all of the seeds representing the world´s crops and is being built to safeguard future food supplies in the event of a widespread environmental or economic collapse.
11) China has been scouring the world looking for oil. China has been in the Orient, in the Middle East, and in our backyard. Chinese have contracts in Canada, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Iran and Africa. China almost bought Unocal, a U.S. oil company, and they will be back again trying to secure an oil company in our country. China now is the second largest importer of oil in the world with an economy growing at over 10% per year. Let us not forget India´s growth at 10% per year.
12) Algae, along with cellulosic ethanol are the only long term answers to our fuel and global warming problems
Joseph LaStella, stated "Today we are closer than ever before solving our energy and global warming issues. The solution is ALGAE, one of the oldest forms of life on Earth."
Algae-to-biofuels is quickly becoming a hot item. Unfortunately, like many new technology trends nonsense prevails and uninformed investors follow the yellow brick road. However, there is reality emerging.
The truth is, that without algae, life on Earth as we know it would not exist. Almost three billion years ago our planet was a hostile place with excess N2, CO2 and toxic gases in the atmosphere until algae in the oceans began to transform CO2 through photosynthesis into oxygen (O2) making the air breathable. Then sunlight split some of the oxygen molecules to recombine into ozone (O3) and created the Ozone Layer, which protected the Earth´s surface from the devastating UV rays from the sun. Therefore, without algae we would not be here today.
Today we are calling on algae again to save our planet. It is worth repeating the five major factors that favor algae. These are as follows:
1. Algae produce 100 times more oil per acre than traditional food oilseed crops such as soy etc. (Note: Algae produces 4000 gallons of oil per acre per year versus 50 gallons per acre for soy.)
2. Algae eat CO2, the major Global Warming Gas, and produce oxygen.
3. Algae require only sunshine and non-drinkable (salt or brackish) water.
4. Algae do not compete with food crops for either agricultural land or fresh water.
5. Algae can reproduce themselves and their oil every 6 hours, while it takes Mother Nature millions of years to produce crude oil in the ground.
In New Mexico alone, the U.S. Department of Energy (US DOE) estimates that there are 5 billion acre-feet of salt water under the uninhabitable desert sands, which are good for little except growing algae.
Green Star Products, along with its Consortium partners, believes it has a decisive lead in the algae-to-biofuels and cellulosic ethanol race because it already possesses industrial biodiesel technology, cellulosic ethanol technology and has a technology lead in the commercial scale production of microalgae.
The above factors present an energy picture that is not sustainable even in the short-term and getting worst by the day.
Algae-to-biodiesel can really make a substantial contribution to energy independence and can provide the U.S. with more fuel than soy oil, canola oil or corn oil combined without increasing human food prices and reducing animal feed prices.
A recent survey taken from the American public voted as follows:
a) Surprisingly enough, only 4.5% of the American public blamed OPEC;
b) Even more surprising, only 3.6% of the American public hold the oil companies to blame;
c) 30% blamed Congress;
d) 15% blamed themselves;
e) 17% blamed President Bush; and,
f) 30% blamed oil speculators.
Seems like the good guys are OPEC and the oil companies. What is your vote?
These prices may also surprise you:
| Venezuela | 12 cents a gallon | |
| Iran | 50 cents a gallon | |
| China | $2.73 a gallon | |
| UK | $9.31 a gallon | |
| Norway | $10.09 gallon |
The 1994 General Motors Geo with a zippy Suzuki engine obtained 45-50 mpg on the highway by most drivers. In 1994, GM was selling them beyond their existing plant capacity to manufacture them. However, GM decided to redesign this popular vehicle for its 1995 model year making the Geo a larger, heavier and less fuel efficient vehicle, and it consequently lost its market share.
What kind of businessman would significantly change one of its best selling vehicles?
Joe LaStella is very well familiar with both model years because he successfully converted many of these vehicles to electric automobiles off his assembly line during the early days of when California had electric car mandates to take effect in 1998.
